This 2019 Energy Exchange recorded session explores energy storage. Energy storage can contribute to resilience through optimization of renewable generation sources, provision of isolated regional or local power, and aid the restoration and startup of systems. A holistic approach is needed in the development of bi-directional electrical energy storage and other technologies to increase the flexibility of energy supply and demand. Cost-competitive energy storage services and applications are critical to the overall success of incorporating resilience into project implementation. This session offers U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) perspectives and case studies for energy storage.

- DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's Advance Energy Storage Initiatives and how their holistic approaches to energy storage focuses on developing technologies to drive improvements in bi-directional electrical energy storage;
- Applications, attributes, and requirements for energy storage at DOD;
- Drivers for deciding on which technology is the best fit for the customer system (including the quantities and balance of electrical and thermal loads); and
Lithium ion technologies.
